THE BEAST WITHIN
The world knows the PAX League as a private foundation dedicated to the philosophical pursuit of global peace, engaging in human rights missions, environmental campaigns, and charitable projects. This information is correct, but it is not all PAX does, to about one-third of the employees, PAX is an acronym for Paranormal Allied eXperts. Deep in the heart of PAX’s D. C. building is a beehive of secret labs and experimental studies researching the mystical, telepathic, transformational sciences that are invading the world into a new era of defense – peace through PAX.
Two years ago, Paige Holt, a PAX agent, was involved in a marine engineering project of remote underwater communication. At the same time, her husband, Kieran Holt, a PAX super agent, was part of a team developing superpowers of vision, hearing, and strength through combining wolf and human ectoplasm, when the lab he was working in exploded, injuring and contaminating him, and killing his partner, Phil. Kieran disappeared that night, and with the damning charges against him, including treason, when he is found, he will be imprisoned in an isolation facility for the rest of this life.
With the help of Kieran’s cousin, Dub, Paige finds her husband on a remote island where he has been existing while attempting to recreate a serum to counteract the effects of the activation serum that turned him from scientist to experiment – a wolf trained for attack. The helicopter pilot who brought Paige to Callula Island was, in fact, a PAX agent who tried to kill her. The agent was killed by a large wolf that Paige realizes was actually Kieran. Paige and Kieran narrowly make their escape in the helicopter that brought her to Callula, and now both are fugitives from the government. Kieran is not, and never has been a traitor, and he recognizes that whoever framed him is someone he knows and trusts – and now he cannot trust anyone but Paige.
From page one of THE BEAST WITHIN, Suzanne McMinn creates a fantastic world centered on the paranormal. Her richly developed protagonists are likable, and the fast-paced plot is dangerous and exciting. This story is a thriller with a stunning climax.
